So this weekend I was touring the Driftless and followed one of those, "Rustic Roads" in Layfayette County, outside of the town of Hazel Green. Following the Rustic Road signs we were looking for an old lead mine when what to my wondering eyes should appear but " stiles " over a fence into the Galena River. These were those ladder type stiles and had "public fishing Dnr Signs attached. Never heard of trout fish in there, but have never found stiles for anything other than trout.anybody have a clue? Not listed on wisco dnr trout maps or anything?

Probably Bass water. But I'd bet there's a few big Trout there early in the season while the water is still cold.

Bill has it right. There is a lot of public water on the Galena, but the fishing is mostly for Smallmouth.

so even with those " ladder " type stiles, it's probably not trout water?

I can assure you that there aren't any fish in the Galena River, and certainly not any smallmouth.

Best to just move along...

The Galena is an outstanding smallmouth river after the water warms. You also will be entertained by armadas of carp, red horse, suckers, and maybe a gar or northern. Most of the river is in easement and maintained by Isaac Walton League and Smallmouth Alliance. Fish it on a warm July day and you'll grow bored or realing in fish. Most 10" and under by my fishing partner pulled in a 20"er last Fall.

thanks for setting me straight.....I see " stiles " and I get all goosey thinking my next brownie is lurking right there......doesn't happen much, so am used to the disappointment.
