For those veteran Chrome-chasers, does one handicap himself by not hitting the stream before 8 or 9 am? Got a friend that wants to fish the Brule Saturday but figures it don't matter if we're not staked out at a good spot at sun-up. Are there fish to be had in late morning or early afternoon?

Right place right time for those elusive bastards.

There are plenty of good spots on that river. I wouldn't worry about that. Just gotta know when to keep your feet wet as all.

Evening can be just as productive as the daytime in my experience.

I got a good guide. His Mom owned the fly shop in brule for many years. If I get pinched I'll make him pay the fine.Flapper

Even better!

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about getting a spot. I've watched a hole worked over by 3 guys. Once they left I watched the guy on the bank get in and on his 2nd cast land a fish.

I've only ever been steelheading once, but I caught mine (see avatar BigGrin ) at about 4 in the afternoon. Maybe it's different with spinners, as I caught it on a #4 Mepps, but you can definitely elicit an aggression strike on a sunny afternoon!

We've had success at all hours of the day. I think it really is about covering ground and working hard.

With that said, I'm a first light kind of guy, and my best Steelhead day on the Brule came within 90 minutes of sunrise (9 fish hooked, and 6 landed).

My buddy got a 26" yesterday at 1:30. I hooked up once to a fish and once to my thumb. Will post pics soon. Great day to be on the river, everybody we talked to was hooking up or catching fish. One group of three had six fish to hand in one hole. My friend netted a really nice fish and proceeded to lost it for another fisherman. Saw another guy break off a fish after a battle. Everyone we talked to thought it was the best fishing of the year on fri and sat.
