I use a 3x for hoppers. When they rush a hopper they aren't going to notice a leader, and you can get away with casting a little more aggressively (which is a face-saving way of saying you can donk a cast into the grass along the bank and not break off as easily). Plus can help wrestle a fish away from cover if you have to.

With lighter tippets like a 5x, if it's a bigger bug you can get hinging, especially if there's any kind of wind, so a heavier tippet can actually present better because you get better turnover. I really like the Umpqua Power Taper leaders for hoppers. They turn over really well. Use them for indicator rigs too actually.

Bill - What do you use for fishing gloves? I have had two trips to the dermatologist this year and he tells me I need to be more careful. I guess I better take that seriously.

I did buy a sun hoodie this summer from Gander in La Crosse on their clearance sale, but didn't get gloves yet.

Most importantly, NICE FISH!

I have a pair of Outdoor Research sun gloves that I would recommend as well to Bill's suggestion. Inexpensive and don't interfere with fishing

Seems like the benefits of a 3x leader are worth it (in regards to hoppers). I'll make sure to stop into the fly shop and grab some. Thanks again for the advice!
