Restructuring

Republican Rep Amy Loudenbeck argued that shuffling the DNR is long overdue. She said budget refocuses the agency on the job it’s supposed to be doing:

"This is a regulatory agency, it’s not a research agency. The function of the DNR is environmental protection and natural resources management. I think that the reorganization that we’re voting on today will ensure consistency with permit decisions, responsiveness and interpretation of state law."

Yeah, that's code for making the DNR more business-friendly and less Natural Resources friendly. Which is funny, because I though DNR stood for Department of Natural Resources. This isn't, or at least shouldn't be a partisan issue, but Republicans have completely abandoned any semblance of conservation. They've been making it pretty easy for center-right folks like myself to drift the other way. And at this point if you're a trout fisherman and you vote for Scott Walker in 2018, there is really nothing to say.

On another note, it's kind of shame that a bunch of retirees Green Fire had to take action to fill the massive void being created by the current administration's DNR (or lack there of). But hopefully they can provide a little bit of a stopgap.

Thanks for posting this. News like this is especially heartbreaking; in a state that has produced wonderful contributions to conservation and civic life like A Sand County Almanac and the Wisconsin Idea, it's hard to believe the state has changed that much. How values and traditions like protecting cold-water resources and addressing climate change among many others have become anathema to the voting populace is embarrassing and moral cowardice at it highest level.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. There are many ways to measure success. Tallying dollar totals is only one of those ways--and not an espescially good one. Sady, we are living in an era where the dumbest actions are rationalized soley by claiming that we'll either save or make money by taking said action. Unfortunately, the old saying about "penny wise, pound foolish" usually applies. Quality of life can be quickly degraded if those in charge simply look the other way while big money interests have thier way.

Iowa's government just made gift of $213,000,000 to Apple Computers to build a giant data center near Des Moines. The reasoning was that the new facility would provide as many as 50 new jobs. A few taps on the calculator shows it's costing us $4,260,000 per job. Sure, a couple of those will be high pay positions, but more will be night watchman or janitor-type jobs. I'm beginning to suspect that there is a secret Republican system of mathematics where these things actually make sense in some perverse way.

To add a little cherry on top, the state legislature is poised to pass a mining bill that will remove the requirement that companies have to prove they're not polluters before they're given a permit.

Aldo Leopold would be ashamed of how were destroying Wisconsin's legacy of conservation.

It's happening on the National level too. With "friends" like these, sportsmen don't need enemies. What's happening is Un-American.
