Here are a few of my favorites:

Drunk and Disorderly (Tommy Lynch)
Cheech Leech (Fly Fish Food)
Flügenzombie (Fly Fish Food)
Seasoned Geezer (Gunnar Brammer)
Trout Nugget (Gunnar Brammer)
The Martian (Gunnar Brammer)
Sculp Daddy (Gunnar Brammer)
Mike's Meal Ticket (Mike Schmidt)

These are all basically updates of the classics from Galloup, et al., and make use of some of the newer materials.

I know a lot of people swear by the Frick's Fix in the Driftless. I tied up a few in some different colors, and I can let you know how those turn out after my trip this week!

I've had luck with natural/yellow, olive, and black.

It's also pretty hard to beat the size 6–10 wooly buggers in black, brown, and olive, especially if you're looking for numbers and not monsters.

If I've learned anything this year, it's that you can't throw anything too big. I'm a dirty spin guy, but I've been using half ozers since june...and it seems to work just fine Razz

Thanks guys, any particular color working better than others? I've had some success with white this past week.

Thanks Eddie. Here's my first 20 with a fly rod. Doubtful I'll spin fish again after last week.

What do y'all use for leader? I know one guy who just uses 2-3' of 6lb fluro. I'm giving a tapered 5' 2x with like 18" of 3x tippet a shot.

Since it's 5 degrees out and I have the cold on my mind, and I still need to let my dirty spin guy freak flag fly, I also spliced up some 8lb fireline to 6lb spiderwire with a loop at one end and a snap at the other (about 6' long total) in the hopes that maybe I'll be able to get out of tying any knots at all when I go out on Friday.

For fly rod fishing I usually go with a tapered 3X or 4X leader shortened to 6 foot (cut from the butt) and a 2mm tippet ring tied on the end. Then I add a length of appropriate weight tippet to make the total rig 8 foot long. The key to this rig is keeping the tippet length 2 feet or less - longer than that and it becomes difficult to cast and get the fly to turn over. For top water dries I go with 4X or 5X tippet, heavier for sub-surface stuff. It's a lot easier in the field to tie tippet to a tippet ring than it is tie directly to the leader.

For hoppers or big streamers I run a shorter 2X or 3X leader with 3X tippet. No worries about breaking off accidentally and you can rip the fly away from the weeds. In dirtier water leader and tippet weight won't matter as Trout will never see the line.

This setup is less expensive than tying on new leaders all the time. Tippet is cheap and any wind knots usually form there instead of on the leader.
