Good day to be outside. Scouting some water with @thedriftless1 as he preps to help out with the Reel Recovery retreat (fly fishing retreat for men living with cancer) in September. Tiny midges were popping in a Vernon County pool, but I tricked this one with a BWO. [My eyesight is subpar and can't see tiny midge flies or tie on tiny midge flies]

BWOs took a few fish and then I switched to a black leech and all was good. As Eddie would say, "I was so happy."

This past Sunday saw me back south of the Wisco (my "home" territory) for the first time in a month – been exploring around RC for the past 4 weekends.

The small stream that I hit between Madison and the Mississippi Flapper was clear and running nicely. It was a beautiful autumn day to be on a stream – golden sunshine, warm but not humid, a slight breeze, leaves tuning with a few falling, that fall smell and some willing fish despite the full sun.

In this little run of very shallow riffles…

Got this one…

And 5 feet up, got this one…

The best fish were all in the shallow riffles although I did get some out of the pools. Of note was this one who had a pretty severe spinal injury or deformity…

Didn't fight real well for his size which is understandable.

Wonderful morning with 10 solid browns and 3 brookies.

In many streams, this one is a decent fish...

In the Dinkville stream near Madison that I fished this morning, this fine fish is easily the biggest I've ever seen there.

Previous best over many outings was 12 inches and this one was 15.

Funny how one fish can change your perspective on how a day is going or went.

Love all the red through its middle.

Starting to think I'm the last one still fishing... Laugh

Snuck out last night after work when opportunity presented itself. Streams really showed few signs of the rain we just got. Clearly they had room to absorb the new water.

Water clarity was normal and depth was only a few inches higher than it's been.

Got three fish including this fine 18 inch fella...

Knew I had good fish on right away and enjoyed watching him make a wake as he fought back and forth across the pool.

Could see other nice fish stacked in this hole and spent (wasted) the next half hour trying to entice them with everything else in my box. They chased a few times but knew something was up after the fight with the big guy.

Had another similar fish on at a different hole and at first thought it was big but it must have swam towards me coz it then seemed small and I let my guard down and strted to reel it in as if it was a 12 incher.

All of a sudden it's at my feet and BIG and then it spits the hook coz I have no leverage anymore.

Oh well. Got one of em.

A better look at it...

One of the more pronounced kypes I've seen in person.

Tiger!

Managed to squeeze in a couple hours fishing today before the rains set in, and the season ends. Caught a bunch of other fish and stuff, but this is all I seem to be able to post right now due to ongoing forum issues.
