Message from Duke Welter for anyone interested in tying flies over the winter...

Viroqua area Fly-Tyers:

Since most of us find ourselves welcoming an occasional night out to get together with other fly-tyers, there’s been lots of interest in tying this winter at the American Legion in Viroqua (even though winter hasn’t even come close to us yet!). Last year many of you found Wednesday night at the Legion (aka Wings Night) convenient. So, we’ve arranged for tying nights starting WEDNESDAY, December 6, beginning at 6:30 a.m. or thereabouts and continuing until it’s time to leave. We’ll have the back room, unless there’s a big group of paying customers to trump us for a night. If you use a tying light, it’s wise to bring the light and an extension cord.

The American Legion hall, aka Bistro 138, is located at 120 N. Rusk Avenue, Viroqua, a block east of Main Street on Decker Ave. (Highway 56). It has a full menu of sandwiches, 20 beers on tap and a Wings Special on Wednesdays.

These evenings don’t have a formal program, and some show up just to watch people tying local favorite flies and inventing their own. Beginners are welcome, and if you don’t have tools or materials, sometimes we can help get together a starter tying outfit to try to interesting hobby. (Or, if you’re a total novice, you might put a basic tying kit on your Christmas list.)

If someone has a pattern they’d like to learn or a material to learn to use, just mention it and someone can demonstrate it the next session. Some of our tyers are outstanding teachers, notably the Silver Doctor, Bob Blumreich.

The Legion folks are expecting us December 6 and 13, January 3, 10, 24 and 31. I’ll be out of town December 27 and didn’t schedule a tying night then, but if there’s interest among tyers we can set it up beforehand.

Coulee Region TU meetings are December 20 (also at the Viroqua Legion, and featuring the Driftless Angler’s co-owner, Geri Mayer, talking about opportunities for women fly-fishers for education and gear), and January 17, featuring UW-La Crosse’s Fly-Fishing Professor, Jason Freund, talking about his favorite trout food, caddis. The January 17 meeting will be at the Westview Supper Club in West Salem, and we’ll probably car-pool from Viroqua.

Please pass this on to other anglers interested in tying with us, or to fly-fishing websites. Call me if you have any questions. Otherwise, we hope to see you December 6!

Duke Welter
