Got out on both days this weekend.
1) Saturday, SE MN (north of I-90), a medium-sized Driftless watershed. Light snow most of the day and air temperature in mid- to upper- 20s. But stream temperatures started around 44 degrees and rose to 46 degrees (when I left at 2PM). Lots and lots of cookie-cutter browns on my standard winter nymph, a beadhead Utah Killer Bug with a pink hot spot.
2) Sunday (today), western WI, (south of I-94), the upper reaches of a watershed (small creek). Cloudy, with wind, air temperatures rising all day into low 40s by 2PM. Stream temperature held steady at 40 degrees. Yes, the water was low and gin clear. But that stream temp held steady. And the fishing was slow. Only four to hand, and those were hard-earned.
Just a friendly reminder that it's that time of year when a stream thermometer is especially handy. |
