Anyone every backpacked into a campsite there? Is it worth it, as in is it likely there'll be sites available in April?

Looking at one of the stream side sites for one night if the weather works out. Might be able to cast a bit around the Kickapoo.

Many times. Yes, better to go in April. Avoid the summer hordes. The folks at the visitor center are very helpful; give em a call, or PM me. But then again, I might not tell the truth about fishing in the KVR.

Cool.

Not worried about how 'good' the fishing is. Would probably just have my tenkaraand cast in to some corners or something if I get there in time.

May check out the feeders there too but a couple of my staples are in the area so may just do that.

One question: are there multiple springs to use to get water to filter/boil? Not sure about using the Kickapoo's water although it's probably better there than further downstream.

Also one to the north off County Hwy P -- @ one of the campsites in Daines Valley.

I think there are others, just can't think of where offhand.
If you call the Visitor Center they can point you to the nearest options on your backpacking route.
Speaking of Daines Valley, I always recommend Blackhawk Rock Trail. There's a couple real nice folks that maintain it.

Update on this...decided to do this this past weekend.

I screwed up by bringing my waders/shoes and fly rod with. By the time I got to my campsite, I didn't feel like fishing but forced myself to since I'd made the dumb decision to add that much weight. Should have just left those in the car and gone exploring once I had camp set up. Cool place.

I had plenty of clothes but night was not comfortable. Beautiful morning though. May go back in the fall or something. The Kickapoo was running beautifully but it's a hard stream to fish and I would imagine it needs to be a warmer day for fish to be active if any are around. Heard coyotes close by, lots of cranes, owls and other birds.

Thanks for the tips again.
