The cold weather is messing up how and where I want to fish for big browns so I've been targeting big brookies in a new spot and it has paid off.

Near record lows in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow night. Ugh!!

Nice and Fat. Good job Matt! How does your strategy change in the cold, early season?

Mark, the biggest tactic for me during the early season is slowing down my presentation no matter what I'm using. Especially if the water is cold (the other day when I started my water temp was 35°).

Not one of the big brookies I've caught lately were while casting the traditional upstream and across. All across and sweeping it slowly downstream or "hanging it in the current".

As you know I like to yank raps when the water temperature gets warmer but that's way too aggressive right now.

Holy. Shit.

I've never seen a brookie that big in this neck of the woods. I caught a fat bastard (18") like that in Yellowstone a few years back.

Nowadays, I'm happy as hell If I catch a 12" brook in the Driftless.

Beautiful!

Thanks guys! Here are a couple more pics. Got out a couple more times after brookies and the last outing was spectacular.
