Yeah, many spots in lower DA got 3-4" in the last 48 hours.

The rain will stop later today, but then the temps plummet 30-40 degrees with overnight lows below freezing. The winds tomorrow are expected to gust 25-30mph.

Ugh. I think I'll stay home until conditions improve a bit.

Water still quite high west of Madison.

Not optimistic for Grant tomorrow.

Pffffftttt

Caught fish but if I don’t get to a wider stream soon I’m gonna lose my shit.

NW Driftless is fishable. The stream I was on this late afternoon was 95% clear. It was at banks on Wednesday. R

NE Iowa is looking good for the weekend, smaller streams are high but running clear and bigger watersheds stained but fishable today in Allamakee and Winneshiek county.

Not sure what was going on today. I fished three streams in three different counties, and only caught two small Brookies.

Friday, I had a much better day. The temperature was 32 degrees when I arrived at my first stream, but the Trout were biting strong all day. Lots of smaller Browns, but a couple of decent fish found the net.

The streams in Vernon county on Friday were running clear to slightly stained. The creeks in Richland, Iowa and Dane counties today were up a foot or more and had only 12-18 inches of visibility. Looked great, just nothing biting.

Pretty tough trying to sneak a cast through this stuff. Sure would be easier if hoppers were still in play.

It should've been a better day today as the air temp warmed up into the 40s. Go figure.

Still debating if I'll go out on Monday or not. Pretty beat up and sore tonight. I hate to end the season on a down note though.

Only one word sums up the Saturday fishing - fukn leaves. Guess that 2. hahaha They were filling the water column and catching on hooks about 80% of the time. Very irritating!! Sunday will likely be more of the same. R

Big water in Grant still blown although I saw people trying to fish it.

Smaller water was in great shape and I cobbled together a good-ish day. Almost 40 to hand but mostly small fish.

Funny that while the big water was blown, one of the small streams I fished seemed low and it’s on the same shed.

Heading north up the Kick valley today.

Little bummed that the big water in Grant won’t be fishable again this season but it’ll be there in January.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Kick...

Was driving past the road to a large stream that I was just positive would also be blown out as all the other big water down here is.

Got a half mile past the turn and thought I should at least go have a look. I really wanted to fish some big water before the close and the tribs of the Kick Valley were not gonna scratch the itch.

Turned around and had a look.

Great choice.

Water was at a nice full volume and moving along but wasn't too high or silty - just a perfect stain.

Turned out to be an absolutely outstanding day as the fish were active everywhere - riffles, runs, pools, calm water straights...

Size structure on this stream is nice too as the cookie cutter brown is 11-13 inches and I got a pile of those.

I only took the UL's on the stream today and those fish bend a UL rod quite nicely. Such a nice change from a lot of the dinkfests I've experienced lately.

Fished from about 7:30 to 1:30 and my count was well over 50 fish. Several of the browns were 15-17 inches and also got a pair of 19s.

What a day and probably should have fished till dusk, but it was time to get home and I was content. One of my favorite outings of the year for sure.

I really needed a day like that.

Tomorrow will have a tough time matching today.

Gonna give it a shot though. Wink

Is it snowing in LaCrosse?

Radar says so...

Oh yeah and had the entire part of the stream where I was to myself. Solid couple of miles.

I am thinking this is not the last fish of the 2018 inland season, but it could be Sad

Overnight temps were below freezing and I awoke to this.
UserPostedImage

Yesterday's fishing had been extremely challenging with piss poor results, so I was happy this happened on the third cast!
UserPostedImage

The browns were mostly aggressive. In this short section, I had 6 to hand and another 3 or so short biters get away.

The only dink!

Assorted nice 12s and several 15s followed as the Christmas card scenes began!

Christmas card fish 4 sure ThumpUp

The snow was quite heavy, dropping about an inch.

I called Shebs to tell of the morning events, but he was planning on football! I decided I would continue to fish and picked the next downstream section from where I started. It wasn't mid season action, but this happened.

A timber crusher footer, that thought my spinner was the last minnow in the stream! Hit like a freight train!!

Another bruiser 15.
UserPostedImage

Yet another fatass 15!
UserPostedImage

A footer as the snow was letting up!
UserPostedImage

A 13 to end the stretch!!

A beautiful day with snow, pleasant temps and eager browns!

Happy Fishing!!
