The system here is known for them but they're still pretty fun to find in person as I'm so used to little ones most of the time during the summer.

Big Gills through the ice fight like no tomorrow, not much I’d rather do from December-March. That, and your beer never gets warm!
I like Crappie, but sometimes you’ll haul in a 12 that doesn’t even fight until it gets to the hole. A 9 inch gill will outpull a 12 inch Crappie more often than not! And don’t get me started with Pike on an ultralight!

Yeah ice and/or pan fishing for me is food gathering. None of the fights do much for me although I’ve never hooked a pike thru the ice.

Have lots of gills and now want to get some crappies for the freezer.

Back to the streams In 8 days!!

Looking forward to fights on the streams and dinner through the ice.

Yeesh... the bite was slow today. Only brought home two gills.

Ice where I went was great at 4 inches.

Heard that the bite picked way up in the afternoon but by that time I was napping on the couch.

Gonna try to get out at dawn tomorrow and then maybe again late afternoon.

Temps gonna warm up this week so thinking tomorrow is my last chance for a bit.

Didn't get out till late afternoon yesterday.

Bite was fickle once again and my buddy and I each got only 3 apiece.

Didn't see anyone else out there setting the world on fire either. In fact, I overheard a few people remarking that they hadn't had a bite at all.

Ice was already getting soft so I'm guessing it will be unsafe or maybe even open by Wednesday when I could get out again.

That's fine and this was really early for ice and a little bonus to have a few gills in the freezer by mid-November.

Got out today after work. Wanted to get in another outing before the melt that must be coming soon.

Arrived at 3:30 and got nothing for the first hour.

The final 30 before dark it blew up and I got probably 20. Best part was that I was the only one fishing in close to shore and I was just getting one after the other.

Was keeping an eye on the 10-15 guys that were 50 yards deeper and they weren’t getting anything but they also weren’t noticing me as the light faded.

Some were even packing up and leaving as I was bagging gills. Obviously I was right on top of a huge school. This wasn’t by accident as I spent that first hour trying hole after hole after hole.

The holes aren’t freezing and once I zeroed in on the bite, I was just going from one hole to the next to the next in a 30 foot radius and if I didn’t get a bite in 30 seconds I’d move coz it was that on.

Have never had such a crazy bite all to myself and after bringing home 5 in 8 hours over the weekend, this was a ton of fun and tonic for my confidence which was shot.

Too bad the light failed which ended the action. Brought home a dozen...

Bite faded at dusk around 4:50 but kept wanting just one more and got this slab a little after 5:00...

Won’t be able to fish again till Sunday and I have to imagine that the ice will be unstable by then.

Nice to have 17 gills in the freezer already - the silver lining of this stupid-early winter.

Awesome outing and I got some cutting to do.

Nice outing! I’m heading up to northern WI this weekend for some early ice action if Milwaukee is no go. That pumpkinseed looks gorgeous.

Thanks! And luck to you!

You’re the second person to call it a pumpkinseed. Is it the gill plate markings that identify it as such?

I’m not good at bream identification.

This weekend is the opposite for me as the ice should be shot by then down here. I plan on hitting an unclassified river on Sunday.

Oh yeah and the big one was an outlier today at 9 inches but in a month that’s a fairly common “Gill” in this particular fishery.

This water is a special place.
