Excuse me, aren't those "strike indicators?"

The talk of bobbers made me think of an inkling I've had this year to maybe put a strike indicator on just to mess around.

Would bring back the fun of fishing like when I was a kid and that 'mystery' of seeing the bobber go down.

This is what I like to use (in MN, cuz as mentioned, apparently not legal in WI for early season)

UserPostedImage

It's a 1/8th (or was it 1/16? I cant remember) jighead, 2.5" shad color Gulp Minnow. No float, just bottom bouncing. Caught on 25lb powerpro cuz I had it left over from steelheading the fall prior...anyone who tells you trout around here are line shy is full of shit hahaha

January 2015, it found this bastard:

Damn this was so long ago I was fishing in hippers instead of real waders...live and learn LOL

I have a contact that is a local warden and I asked him about these (even sent him a photo so there's no confusion):

UserPostedImage

What I wrote:

"Hi H,

A question came up regarding "artificial" lures for early season trout.

I had mentioned to someone that I wanted to try the (attached photo) tails on a jig for trout and they said that they may not be legal due to the infused scent.

Can you clarify?

Not sure what "donkey sauce" is, but I'm always wanting to be legal when I fish."

His response:

"Hi John,

Yes, this type of artificial bait would be legal.

The response I got was this:

"Gulp/power bait style baits have animal products within and therefore are not legal for the inland catch and release trout season! 100% plastic baits are ok"

I followed up with a question about animal based spray scents, and got this:

"Our local warden has had this discussion with Berkley. The conclusion was the bait contains animal products with in, therefore does not meet the artificial bait requirement as written in law. Our wardens interpretation is sprays/dips are legal even if they contain animal products or fish oil.

This is confusing because artificial baits and sprays evolved into hybrids with animal products around 2002 and the legal definition of artificial bait and spray has remained unchanged.

Artificial baits – No animal products

Sprays – legal"

soooo...

Hahahaha.

Since this is sophisticated gear fishing, not a fly rod, it's neither. It's a 'float.'

Handy chart for you...

Spinning gear: float
Fly rod: strike indicator
Unwashed rabble: bobber
Unwashed rabble from Nebraska: cork

(I had a hardcore steelhead guy go berserk on me once because I kept calling his 'steelhead floats' 'trout bobbers.')

Out West, the unwashed rabble still call it a bobber, and it really does piss people off😂 I just refer to fixed floats as bobbers, and slip floats as, well, slip floats. I will, however, go full aristocrat and refer to my thingamabobber as an indicator, just to appease the fat liners on the Brule.

“Yep, I’m running my X Leg about 54 inches under this size 4 fixed strike indicator, with about 6 wraps of twist shot spread 16-30 inches above my egg cluster fly (molded plastic, not a fly). Would be using the Sage but she busted, so I’ve gotta slum it with the G Loomis.”😂😂
