Exceptionally deep colored rainbow from Iowa. Is it wild?

The best would be to call the biologist at the decorah hatchery. I know of a couple streams that have reproduction in iowa. What county were you fishing?

It was from the lower section of Bloody Run, near the highway bridge.

caught one very similar out of bloody last year as well .... Based on my research, it migrated from Colorado .... it is shunned by all the other rainbows as an 'immigrant' .... purple color is deep embarrassment ...

Wow! That is unbelievable coloring. I didn't think Bloody Run was one of the three Iowa streams where the DNR has acknowledged reproducing rainbows, but this fish was either born in the stream or has lived there for awhile. Take a look at its mouth. Hatchery fish have much smaller mouths because they only eat pellets. It might be worth sending a picture to the DNR and asking their thoughts.

That is one pretty Rainbow Dan. I wonder if the dark purple band is winter coloration? Less sun, darker colors.

Tail and fins look in good shape and not stubby or tattered.

I haven't caught enough bows to know one from anther.

Certainly is a pretty fish.
