I was indecisive on Saturday morning about fishing or waiting for better weather: steady rain and a predicted plunge in temperatures made me wonder. But cabin fever won and I made the drive to Bluff and Whitewater Creeks. In spite of all the rain, the water remained very clear, even downstream. No other anglers out either; I'd been concerned about that, because this is small water and I usually wait for weekdays.

The main excitement was seeing a sandhill crane right across the stream from me: it's sidewalk-wide at that point, so it's as close as I've ever been to a sandhill. I don't know if it was a hen with a nest or young ones, but she was not happy with me being there and was very vocal about it. I wonder if they are as territorial and aggressive as geese if you get close to their chicks? Also a lot of turkeys around. I jumped a small flock of five hens when I crested a small rise (they couldn't hear me approach in all the high winds). Amazing how fast they accelerate: birds that size get up to top speed quickly when they have enough open space to get their wings going.

Bad news is the fishing was not at all productive. Places that have produced in the past didn't this time. I thought it would be better with the heavy cloud cover, but maybe the falling temps-upper 40s by the end of the day-shut things down. The only fish I landed were shiners. I wasn't too disappointed though, as I was able to catch the Blackhawks' game 7 on the radio on the drive home; had they lost, the day would've been more of a bust.
