All, I'm heading back to Decorah for a week next Thursday. This is my first time back in the summer since I picked up fly fishing 3 yrs ago. I'll be checking out the handful of streams I'm familiar with when I lived there but was throwing panther martins.

My question to you is what flies should I pick up? I'm thinking about an assortment of terrestrials and elk hair caddis. Any other dries? Nymphs? Also I'll be flying into Minneapolis what fly shop is on the way I should stop at? I see that there are a couple in mpls but I'd prefer avoiding the city if I can.

Thanks!

Mend is closer and more convient to get from MSP. You'll be is the city, but just residential areas. The fly shop in Preston will be right on your way.

Thanks I didn't think about Preston. That's my casey's pizza stop so the fly shop will be a good choice. Given the numbers I'm surprised Decorah doesn't have a shop.

The Hatchery, downtown Decorah had a small fly department

As a SW Metro resident, I have to recommend Mend as well. Not only is it a good shop, but it's the only independent fly shop reasonably close to me so I want to see it prosper! (Btw, if there is something closer that I don't know about, somebody please let me know!) Mend is actually quite close to the airport, too. They have a good selection of tying materials and flies, as well as a range of gear from simple to pretty high-end. In my experience the knowledge/advice has been good too.

The Fly Angler in Blaine is excellent. Lots of fly tying materials. Worth the drive to the north metro area anytime you're in the Twin Cities.
