Big rain last night looks to have hit my area pretty hard. Wanted to fish today, but I guess I'll have to wait for the weekend and hope for the best. Any eyewitness reports appreciated BigGrin

Anyone know if the streams in the Westby area are ok?

I'll be there over the weekend. Got a couple in mind near Viroqua that should clear up but would like to limit drive time.

Thanks.

thankfully yesterday's deluge that hit trempeleau and north really bad did not drop that much rain. i live in chaseburg and rain gauge said .25" ... we got very little more rain last nite ..... Coon creek is muddy but clearing at the edges/shallows .... timber still has good stain on it .... bohemian some stain, some clear ... watch out of the bulls on Bohemian ... Spring coulee should be clear ....

I've always enjoyed fishing Trout streams after a big rain event.

Most of the fair weather crowd stays home after a big rain and you have little competition. Trick is to seek out the shorter streams, and the smaller tribs off larger streams. These typically clear first. As the day wears on, you can move downstream as the bigger streams start to clear. A bit of stain on a stream is typically good for fishing. The Trout are relaxed knowing that predators can't see them easily, and more importantly - they can't see you. This allows you to easily get into position to cast without spooking out an entire stretch of the stream. Larger, dark colored streamers are a good bet in stained water. The strikes are usually solid and the bigger Trout tend to be more active during the day in dirty water.

And, a good gully washer will flatten down those pesky stream side weeds.

That said, my spies in SW Wisconsin tell me that many of the streams there are running muddy and up to their banks, but have dropped since this morning. The larger and longer Rivers (Pine, Kickapoo, Blue, Willow) are up and will stay that way for awhile. The smaller streams and tribs should clear quickly this afternoon and evening. With cooler temps in the forecast, tomorrow could be great day to fish.
