Went into work early Friday morning so I could get out in the afternoon. Was definitely worth it!

Went out to a small stream known to harbor nice brookies, as I often do these days ThumpUp

Started hooking into some fish right away...slow at first, but it picked up as the day went on.

Fish are starting to color up for fall, by the looks of things.

UserPostedImage

This makes the stream look bigger than it is - wide/flat/slow section (this is the type of spot where most of the fish seemed to be, though.)

This bad boy (girl?) was under the brush on the right hand side

UserPostedImage

This was an unassuming looking run...barely knee deep. but on my first cast I saw a large orange flash and threw a few more before walking through...

And then, BOOM. Fight was on. After a couple hard runs and a net fail, I finally had him

Taped at 19". Just shy of the magic number, of course. I've hit some 20s in MN, and lake runners up at the Brule, but the WI driftless 20 still eludes me...I'll get one...someday... Crying

Off he goes! I briefly considered bonking him...you just gotta know a fattie like that is in a tiny stream like this is just chowing down on brookies all day, but I couldn't do it. Magnificent bastard. Someone will have a good day when they find him at 20+ next year.

Pulled this 12" out of the same run...so clearly the brooks are doing okay despite his appetite ThumpUp

After that, I fished another mile or so, but never got to the beaver ponds I was there to find...had to turn back so I didn't have to wade back downstream in the dark. Some day I'll get there. Life is hard when you don't make as far upstream as you had planned because you were catching too many fish LOL

A good day for you! Nice work. Just knowing that there are streams in the Driftless that produce lots of brook trout is somehow comforting. Not many Iowa streams have the pristine conditions brookies require for spawning.

Beautiful fish and a jumbo brown thrown in. That's an A-1 afternoon.
