Here's a place to discuss our adventures this weekend.

Went out today to scout and test a few things.

Many streams are frozen over completely. Some have open sections or openings in the middle of the stream.

Drove by the Sugar River and then down to Hollandale and around out there.

What I saw of the Sugar was a rink. Smith Conley Creek was mostly frozen with really no fishable areas. Dodge Branch had some open water, but the deeper/slower areas were frozen. Williams-Barneveld Creek was frozen over.

Parts of the East Branch Pecatonica (unclassified section) were open, but the hole where I caught a nice brownie on Monday (again, unclassified section) was frozen over and even the riffles above it were starting to coagulate.

The classified section of the East Branch up towards 18 looked mostly open but I didn't stop to look closely.

Anyway...

Tested some 10# braided with a Rap under a bridge on the Pec. Had a little brownie follow it, but saw no other fish. Not a surprise on the Pecatonica as it's unclassified for a reason and fish can be few and far between. Wanted to see how I liked the braided - should work well.

Tested my clothing and found my foot warmth to be lacking. Gonna need to get some of those packets to put by my toes for tomorrow. Fingers also got cold, but not sure what to do about that. Can't fish with full gloves on.

My core was completely comfortable.

Have fun and stay warm out there tomorrow.

Can't wait!

It's going to be a very "shrinkage" kind of weekend. Stay strong/warm everyone.

I will be staying away from the streams until it warms up.

It's going to be a while before things are consistently or comfortable fishable.

Fished Otter Creek west of Dodgeville today. decent amount of open water from the headwaters down to Highway Q.

The weather was actually quite nice and I was comfortable. Was out of the wind down in the valley and the bright sun made it feel warm out. My fingers didn't even get cold.

Unfortunately, the fish didn't want to play.

Saw one all day. Luckily, I caught him...

Not big, but nice color compared to the ones I was getting out of the Pecatonica.

Got this one on a Rapala in a big pool.

Got 3 Browns all around 15-17 inches in an hour of fishing in Dane county before I decided fishing with iced up micro guides wasn't all that fun. I'll be back at it Monday when it's warmer.

Rapala was also my bait of choice. First time fishing for trout in the winter so I didn't know what to expect but they wanted the countdown I was tossing.

Has anybody been out to the local streams (Kinni, Rush, smaller streams). I have never fished this time of year, but was looking to get out tomorrow. Will it be easy to find open water? Do I need to stick to the wider/faster water?

Judging by tomorrow's forecast there should be plenty of open water to be found on any designated trout stream in West Central Wisconsin including both the Rush and Kinni. I haven't heard any reports of people being skunked. But then again like gamblers most fisherman only talk about their results when they win.
