Bloody Run, one of Iowa's premier trout streams classified by the Iowa DNR as an Outstanding Iowa Water, is threatened with the placement of a large cattle feeding operation. Due to the unique karst topography in the region, this stream would be especially at risk should there be a manure spill. Why would give a stream such a designation and pledge to protect it, then allow this sort of development? Agriculture and livestock are an important part of Iowa's economy, but the master matrix doesn't take into account the topography of the Driftless Area or proximity to streams designated as outstanding. Here's what you can do: 1) Show up to a public hearing to voice your concern in Elkader tonight from 4-6PM at 600 Gunder Rd. 2) Follow this link to voice your concern to the DNR- https://iaenvironment.sa...6-403c-b3c1-d38a1cc5df59.

I caught my largest Iowa rainbow trout at Bloody Run.

Unfortunately this is becoming an all to common story.

You would think the folly of siting CAFOs in such environmentally sensitive areas as the Driftless would be obvious. Apparently not to the operators and backers of such operations. Just how much animal waste would you be comfortable with in your drinking water?

It's sad that our elected leaders have changed the laws and regulations to actually make it easier for CAFOs to obtain permitting, and prevent local governments and organizations from opposing them.
