I'm taking my boy on a father/son trip this year, and he asked to do a destination camping/fishing trip. He is ten years old and I've never done a solo backpacking trip, so a super strenuous backcountry excursion seems out of the question. He also wants to spend at least a couple nights outside in the tent, so it can't just be at a lodge. Finally, this is kind of a long weekend trip, not a "trip of a lifetime," so we'll save the fly-in type trips for another time.

I'm pretty interested in Central Idaho, in the Sawtooth and Salmon-Challis National Forests. We go to Idaho to ski every winter and love that area, and we keep saying we want to go enjoy it in the summer too. Also, we may be able to use a relative's house as base camp for free, which is a nice bonus, and would station us close to the Big Wood River and Silver Creek, which are supposed to have some great fishing in a little less rustic surroundings.

Does anybody have experience fly fishing in that area? It looks like there are some pretty cool alpine lakes with fish in them, but I can't quite tell how hard the hike would be. Are the streams accessible and productive? Is it worth the trip?

If you have direct experience and you're in the Twin Cities, PM me - maybe we could talk about the area over a beer sometime.

Thanks!

I've fished the Wydaho area. Henry's fork, Teton, etc. So much fun!

I have done both backcountry and car camping in the pan handle as well as backpacking in central Idaho. I did the Henry's fork and the fall River too. I'm also in the Twin Cities if you want to chat.

I know you said Idaho, but I have done a ton of solo alpine hikes in MT and WY and could offer some options for a one night hike that isn't super strenuous somewhere like the Beartooth's if that is of interest.

Your PM box was full but PM me if I can help.
