I bought one about 3 years ago after fishing stream trout without one for 40 years, and I can't believe I didn't get one sooner. I have a collapsible model which fits into a holster and it isn't too inconvenient to carry it even if you don't use it. I love small creeks and agree with the posters who say it's preferable to fish from the bank. But on medium size or large streams in the driftless, you are often in the water, even on unimproved pasture streams with high banks you often must approach a hole in the stream. When you have to fish from in the stream, a wading staff really helps you keep your balance to thereby avoid spooking the hole.

Thanks all, for the replies. I have only fished once for trout with a guide from the ( driftless angler.) We was wading the stream we were fishing and I only had hip boots. There was a couple of times that I almost went into water over my waders. I thought that a staff with a piece of tape set at the depth af my waders would have been nice, as the water was cold. I fish for mostly gills and bass here where I live and hardly ever get into the water (lakes) but when fishing my local river that has holes that are deep, I like a staff so that I don’t go in over my head.

My grandfather always used the great line, “this water is cold, and deep!” any time he took a leak out in the boat.
"I fish because I love to: Because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness."
