Why are these so rare? In the big river, catching a saugeye happens all the time. Do the two types of trout spawn in the same beds??? Edited by moderator Monday, January 28, 2019 1:12:19 AM(UTC)

I wonder if Minnesota stocks Saugeye? Wisconsin has stopped stocking them a number of years ago.
Additionally, Walleye and Sauger are broadcast spawners and do so in large groups whereas trout pair up so hybrids are probably naturally more common among Walleye and Sauger.

I'm sure cross fertilization happens a lot, but the survival is very very low. Conditions have to be just right. If I recall correctly, hatcheries out west where they're stocked shock the eggs to increase the odds, and even then, it's quite low. They're a different genus, and they don't even have the same number of chromosomes. Sauger and walleye are much more closely related. Edited by user Saturday, January 26, 2019 5:44:13 PM(UTC)

I got into an argument on another site with a guy who insisted he'd caught rainbow/brown hybrids, even after I'd told him they were different species that spawned at different times of the year. He gave up after about 50 people agreed with me. |

I've been lucky enough to catch three Tigers. This one was special: I wish I had a better photo of this guy because he certainly was unique. It's coloration was this bright gold with crimson red lower fins. Super aggressive fish that came out from under a bank to hammer a hopper. Fought like a lion. At first glance, I though it really was some weird hybrid Brook Trout. I've revisited the stream a half dozen times since then, but never saw him again. -Bill |
