One analogy I read somewhere is to think of the stream as a conveyor belt of food. Wherever the conveyor concentrates food, Trout will assemble to feed.

Trout want to expend as little energy as possible fighting current. This is why the transition line (usually a foam line) in the water between the fast and slow current are favorite spots for Trout to hang out and eye up food sweeping by. The biggest Trout usually owns the top step in these holding spots in the slack water. And there will always be a place nearby for them to flee to safety. Either a deep hole, undercut bank, or large rocks to tuck underneath.

Small hook bends in the stream with a small drop in grade is always a hot spot. On the inside of the bend is quiet water to provide a holding spot. The fast current concentrates the food into a small area. The fast water usually has undercut the bank on the outside providing a convenient nearby hiding spot.

These spots are often just below a long rocky riffle section. The rocks are the places were bugs leave their eggs. When sun hits the rocks in the shallow water, a hatch ensues. The bugs are swept down by the current and concentrated at the hook bend.
