Here's a interesting story about fly fishing, Trout economy and conservation efforts in the Driftless Area around Viroqua.

I was a little disappointed with this article, unless the author’s intent was to discourage people from giving trout fishing a try. He makes it sound next to impossible, and disdains anybody who doesn’t use flies, while admitting that he’s “really bad” at it and only tries about once a year. Also wondering why they selected a trout picture taken in Iceland when they could easily find impressive fish photos taken in the driftless area. Even though Isthmus is published in Madison, no mention of the great job Dane County has done acquiring easements and improving trout habitat?

I watched the one guy getting filmed in Avalanche a few decades ago. He never caught a trout while I hammered them using a ultra lite and power craw on a small jig head. Maybe Iceland is the only spot to catch em when you cant do good here

Spin-fishing is to Trout fishing what paint by number is to art? Hahahaha....

Shit like that is why I haven’t gotten more into fly-fishing. What a load of bull. I’d like to see him use a fly rod on the brushy streams I fish... I’ve brought experts out and they’ve failed. Sometimes it’s not an option, and I’m not the type of person to write a spot off because I can’t fish it a certain way...

Why do conservation minded anglers have to put others of that ilk down because they don’t use fly gear?

I'm glad I don't see that attitude on this web site.

a lot of people only do stuff to build up a certain "identity" they imagine themselves having. anything that doesn't reinforce that vision must be shat upon because their actually scared that they're full of said shat.

some people think that by elevating a certain style they can claim expertise over others. they don't have to actually know anything, but if you constantly put others down then they must know more.

i fly fish nothing but dry flies 95% of the time. but if i fish with others they're often throwing jigs or spinners. i'm not a dry fly snob. i just have the most fun fishing that way. fishing is about fun for me. not image or anything else

I'm pretty much the same. People should fish the way they enjoy it most. I give "Euronympher" friends crap for how they fish all in good fun. It interests me none but it works for them. I carry a spin rod with me and use it once in a while - sometimes to test new places quickly. I don't enjoy nearly as much (and I HATE treble hooks), others do. So be it.

It was a decent article - would have been better had he left out a sentence or two.

I enjoyed most of the article, I just didn’t enjoy a couple sentences. I enjoyed the reference to Aldo Leopold. I 100% agree with people fishing how they want to. As long as people aren’t intentionally harvesting big fish, I couldn’t care less how they do it.
