I didn't know exactly where to put this, so Environment and Conservation News got it.

The other day I went to my local feed store to buy cracked corn for the ducks on my local river, and I asked about bales of hay. The proprietor mentioned that this year he only got 225 bales of marsh hay. The weather was so wet, he said, that the usual folks who harvest this could not this year, because those semi-marshes never dried up. "Mmmkay," I thought, and let it slide.

So now I am asking you - have you ever heard of Marsh Hay? Is it special in some way? If it means the meadows near local streams get mown and therefore easier to traverse, great. but do animals somehow like this better? Anything you know about it helps.

My parents hired my brother and I out to a local farmer to bail hay when we were 12-13 yrs old. 50 yrs. ago (Child labor laws, we don't need no stinking child labor laws) In late July, early August we bailed marsh hay, if it was dry enough. It was used mainly for bedding.
Great memories, stacking 75# bails on a hay wagon. Snakes, frogs, birds bailed along with the hay. Once had a hornets nest in a bail. Unloading hay into a 100*+ barn loft. Fun, fun, fun.
With alternative bedding option today, corn stalks, recycled paper, etc, I don't know if many farmers bail marsh hay.
